Redlands, California—Esri today released Explorer for ArcGIS on the Mac, a native OS X application to discover, view, and share maps. The ready-to-use app joins Esri’s family of mapping apps, including Collector for ArcGIS, Dashboard for ArcGIS, and Explorer for ArcGIS on iOS.
ArcView GIS was a geographic information system software product produced by ESRI. It was replaced by new product line, ArcGIS, in 2000. Regardless of it being discontinued and replaced, some users still find the software useful and hold the opinion it is a superior product for some tasks.[1]
History[edit]
ArcView started as a graphical program for spatial data and maps made using ESRI's other software products. In subsequent versions, more functionality was added to ArcView and it became a true GIS program capable of complex analysis and data management. The simple GUI was preferred by many over the less user friendly, more powerful ARC/INFO that was primarily used from a Command-line interface.
ArcView 1.0[edit]
ArcView 1.0 was released in 1991 [2] to provide access to GIS for non-traditional users of the technology. ESRI's flagship professional GIS at the time, Arc/INFO, was based on a command line interface and was not accessible to users that only needed view and query capability. The release did not support Shapefiles at the time.
ArcView 2.x[edit]![]()
ArcView 1 was very popular, and ESRI promised a more functional 2.x version of the product. This product was developed using a multi-platform windowing environment called Neuron Data, which allowed the product to be supported on the increasingly popular Windows 95 and Windows 2000, UNIX, and Mac OS 9 platforms. This product, when finally released (18 months after its initial release date) was very successful for ESRI and brought GIS technology to many people who had not used it before.
ArcView GIS 3.x[edit]
ArcView 3.x included even more full-featured GIS functionality, including a geoprocessing wizard and full support of extensions for raster and 3d processing. It was eventually renamed 'ArcView GIS' by ESRI.
In 1997, ESRI released its final version supporting Mac OS 9 (3.0a). It is still available, although it only runs on older (PowerPC-based) Mac systems, under Mac OS 9.
The last release of ArcView GIS was version 3.3 (May 22, 2002), and was offered for both Unix and Windows variants.
Windows 7 & 8 installation instructions[edit]
It can be copied from an existing installation on a Windows XP machine to Vista, Windows 7 and 8 (search Esri Forums for Instructions).
You can also install it normally using the InstallShield 3 Setup Engine (Is3Engine.zip). The Setup Launcher for ArcView is a 16-bit application and not supported by 64 bit systems. However the InstallShield Engine is 32-bit and will run on a 64 bit system. Using the Is3Engine(File Name: setup32.exe) with its compatibility set to Windows XP SP3, Placed in a WRITABLE folder with the rest of your application install files and run instead of the original setup file (File Name: setup.exe) will allow the software to be installed on a Windows 7 or 8 64 bit system in the normal way. To have the ArcView Help files work you will need download and install WinHlp32.exe from Microsoft.
Reasons Some Users Prefer ArcView 3.x[edit]
Many GIS professionals and users still use ArcView 3 even though it has been discontinued and replaced by a new product line. Some users with access to ArcGIS 9.x or 10.x may still install and use ArcView 3.x.
ArcView 3.x offers various advantages over ArcGIS including faster start up, faster functions such as dissolve, spatial joins and summary functions executed on the tabular data.[1] Some users also strongly prefer having the ability to promote selected records in the tables instead of simply hiding un-selected records as ArcGIS offers.[3] Small scale overlays and spatial joins with basic map/layout creation that tends to be the only tasks done by students are done quicker. Independent consultants, small businesses and organizations may not be able to justify the expense of moving to ArcGIS and the need to maintain annual licenses. Availability of free open source scripts and extensions created by users using the built-in object oriented scripting language Avenue is another reason.

I am running ESXi upd 3 on a Mac Mini 2012. My main environment is Windows & I use VMware Workstation as the ESXi client but vSphere client will work as well. For testing purposes I need VM's with older versions of OS X as well as the latest macOS Sierra. The installation Instructions fro VMware (see http://partnerweb.vmware.com/GOSIG/home.html ) are based on first installing Mountain Lion & then upgrading. I'm not a big fan of upgrading; I prefer a clean install but hey I gave it a try only to find out that the procedure fails at least for El Capitan (the upgrade stops when there's 15 mins left) & Yosemite (hangs at first boot after the upgrade) So I decided to do things differently this time without upgrading. Here's the idea in short:
I create an OS X 10.8 virtual machine with 2 harddisks using the Mountain Lion installation media, then make the 2nd disk bootable containing the installer for the OS X version I actually want to install (10.9 or higher). Next I reboot the VM from the 2nd disk. I erase the old Mountain Lion bootdisk & install the desired 10.9+ OS on it. Done!
The procedure below is tested for 10.9,10.10,10.11,10.12
Esri For Mac Os X 10 11 Download Free
Prerequisites:
Before you begin, verify that the following tasks are complete:
Read General Installation Instructions for All VMware Products.
You already have Install OS X Mountain Lion.app for any version of OS X 10.8.
Ensure your physical system is an Apple-labeled computer. This is required to install or run OS X 10.8, OS X 10.9, OS X 10.10, OS X 10.11 or macOS 10.12 in a virtual machine.
Ensure your physical system can support an additional virtual machine with at least 2GB of RAM.
Installation Steps
Create a new virtual machine with 2 harddisks and select the Apple Mac OS X option that corresponds with the final OS you want to install. If the target version is not available, select the highest version available (in ESXi 6.0 upd3 that is 10.10 64bit)
I use a preallocated disk for the 1std harddisk because it is somewhat faster, for the 2nd disk I don't preallocate disk space
Use the virtual machine CD/DVD drive for installation.
Connect the CD/DVD drive to a datastore image file, complete the following steps:
Esri For Mac Os X Download
Add Install OS X Mountain Lion.app to a datastore that the virtual machine can access.
Set the CD/DVD drive to connect to the Install OS X Mountain Lion.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg image file.
Power on the virtual machine.
Select your language and click the right arrow.
Select Disk Utility and click Continue.
In the left hand pane, select the hard disk at the top of the list. Name it 'Macintosh HD'
Select the Erase tab.
Click the Erase... button and click the confirming Erase button. Wait for the process to complete.
In the left hand pane, select the hard disk below the hardisk at the top of the list. Name it 'InstallHD'
Select the Erase tab.
Click the Erase... button and click the confirming Erase button. Wait for the process to complete.
Quit the Disk Utility application.
Select Reinstall OS X and click Continue & select the disk 'Macintosh HD'.
Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
Make sure you do set a password for the first account you create in Mountain Lion2 (needed for sudo later on)
Now that Mountain Lion is installed, download Install OS X Mavericks.app in the virtual machine using the Mac App Store, or download it onto another Mac using the Mac App Store, and copy Install OS X Mavericks.app to the virtual machine in the Applications folder (important)

or
sudo /Applications/Install macOS Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/InstallHD --applicationpath /Applications/Install macOS Sierra.app --nointeraction
This will convert the 2nd harddisk to a bootable disk containing the installer for the selected OS X / macOS version (10.9+)
Reboot the virtual machine from the 2nd harddisk by setting it as the startup disk or pressing the option key (=Alt key on a PC) while rebooting
Start disk utility to erase the old Mountain Lion harddisk & name it again 'Macintosh HD'. Quit Disk Utility & select installation of Mavericks / Yosemite / El Capitan / Sierra onto 'Macintosh HD'
When the installation is finished, reboot the VM , erase the 2nd harddisk (containing the 10.9+ OS x / macOS install app)
Done! You now have a clean install of OS x / macOS!
